Having the ability to swim around the back yard pool or walk out into the ocean or play in knee deep water doesn't necessarily mean a child is a strong enough swimmer to cope with unfamiliar depths or stressful situations.
Swimming skills can deteriorate rapidly when not swimming regularly, when a child is in a stressful situation or in an unfamiliar area.
The more skills the child has to start with the greater chance of survival!
